Hello Harry,
I've seen worse pictures but fortunately not on my own car.
A lot of SZ's have problems in the C-column area as water is trapped because of the high seals.
Most of such damage is not really visible with the sealing in place and water will destroy the areas in time.
It is important to use a good additional elastic sealing to prevent water creeping under the seal and causing such havoc to the metal structure underneath.

I am starting to worry if my car has this of course
What kind op sealing are you talking about and how can you apply it? With the original seals in place? |

Hello Harry,
what I mean with sealing is what we call "ruitenkit".
It needs to remain elastic and be hydrofobic (repellent to water) but also it has to seal off the cavity between the hard rubber original seals that leak water into the inside of the panels.
Oldfashioned window sealing as used for cars with rubber window seals is okay (against the current glued windows).
You could use silicone sealing but these mostly harden by condensation reactions leading to the formation of acetic acid which attacks the metal so my advice is to stay away from such materials.

Horrifying pictures indeed...!
As I understood part of the reason for this rust (besides moist under the original trimming) are the sharp edges of the body panels.
After moulding the bodyparts weren't properly finished on the edges leaving sharp parts to scratch into the metal once they where glued to the metal structure. Adding moist and a little movement to this speeds up the corrosion proces...

Are you sure this is not a Swedish car and he parks it in his Sauna rather than his garage…? _________________ SZ #376 |

What's the point of buying a plastic car if it's still going to rust!!!

On the subject of rust...I found some very small areas where the front wing covers are pop riveted on.
Looking inside the wheel arch I could see the beginnings of rust around each pop rivet hole...now treated and re-undersealed but worth checking your own cars just in case.
