My catalytic converter has a big hole in it so need to have a new system made starting from exhaust manifold to muffler. Are there any recommendations I should follow - anyone who has any input?[/list] _________________ lancia fulvia zagato 1600 - 72

Forget the cat... just get new downpipes without cats (but with a flexible connection).. your SZ will go quicker, sound much better and still pass emissions..

Not looked at the exhaust to check if this is a daft question...but how about just replacing the cat with straight through pipe(s)?

The problem with doing that is that it does not allow any 'play' in the system and it would probably crack the headers...
I have the original exhaust system but with SS downpipes with flexible connectors and all works perfectly.
Best modification I have done!

OK - understood you do not need the cat and you do need a flexible joint somewhere. But a) is it required to make a change to the downpipes (exhaust manifold) or can I re-use these? Also, what is the recommendation for the silencers under the car - should I retain these (well, new ones of course) or can they be ommitted? Should I have a combined silencer or 2 separate? _________________ lancia fulvia zagato 1600 - 72

The flexi-joint isn't part of the cat is it (again, without looking at the exhaust!)?
Edit:
Here ya go...can't see any flexis in the original, apart from the circular gasket to the headers so does it need them?
Manifold - downpipe - decat (Y shape) - twin pipe box
or...
Manifold - downpipe - 2x decat - twin pipe box
I'd be loathe to remove any boxes or it'll get noisy imho...did this on my old 155 V6 and it gave me a headache until a larger rear box was fitted.

No, there are no flexible joints in the original. I was told that the flexible joints are there to help reduce the stresses placed on the exhaust system.
The rest of my exhaust is original and plenty loud enough once you have removed the cats, so I would just replicate the rest of the original system.

You're right, they take out the "bounce" in the exhaust, more important on FWD cars I think, where the engine rocks back and forth when revving, but I'd be surprised if there aren't any to be honest
Having said that, my old 1.8 155 just had some (carbon?) rings which acted as a hard but flexible joint...wonder if they're fitted???

Okidoki - sounds like I should just replicate the original but get the kat removed...The flex joint may or may not be required, will look at that when talking to the manufacturer. Cheers guys. _________________ lancia fulvia zagato 1600 - 72

I think the Quick Silver exhaust system is only from the cats back.... sounds good, but without the power increase of removing the cats...

Hi alfasz996, do you mean that Supersprint has an aftermarket exhaust system for the SZ?
Is there a link or picture available?
