When I had my car in Dubai, emissions were not an issue (they do not check them). My rusted cat therefore got a one way ticket to the scrap yard. I now have imported the car into New Zealand and yes...emissions are a wee bit out. CO is fine (0.82% - max 1% allowed) but HC's are way too high (800ppm - max 300ppm allowed). So my dilemma is....fit a random aftermarket cat and test. Hopefully this will do the trick but if not...well, I will have to buy the cat to fit it so I do not want to randomly buy and fit if you get my point. Is there anyone out there who had to go through a similar experience - if so, would love to hear from you. _________________ lancia fulvia zagato 1600 - 72

Far as I know SZs can pass emissions tests without a cat because most (all?) were made before cats became mandatory.
High HCs usually means there is a fuelling problem (too much fuel)...
Have you checked the water temp sensor?
Was the engine fully hot when they checked?
Do you have any air leaks causing "false air"?
When were the plugs last changed?
Has the thermostat failed open?

Hi Wrinx. Unfortunately NZ has strict rules on emissions - from what I read, more stringent than Europe. So there's no way around the problem.
I have made a list of possible causes and of course the missing cat is item 1 on the list. Then indeed a leaking vacuum hose or a faulty sensor will be next. I doubt it though because the car is very clean and runs perfectly. In the end, a cat's duty is to burn unburt fuel (hydrocarbons) so my guess is that that will do the trick.... _________________ lancia fulvia zagato 1600 - 72

That's a a pain...good luck sorting it out, I'm sure an aftermarket cat should be sufficient.

If a cat. is required and an original one for the sz is nowhere to be found, the cat. from a 75 3.0 V6Qv is similar as far as I know and easier to score.
Tip; try making an easy removable one (with flanges welded on both sides for example) so you can easily fit the cat for MOT and replace it with a straight tube for the rest of the year...

Hello
Alfa 75 of the cat does not fit because of the slightly smaller diameter pipe than bein Alfa Sz I still have a cat as original with only 600km |
